Seddon

Using comms as a catalyst for change in construction.

THE BRIEF

We were appointed by Seddon to raise the profile of its owner and director. Nicola Hodkinson longstanding legacy of delivering social value, including mental health initiatives and industry wide collaboration to combat the construction skills gap. She had also led the company’s huge fundraising efforts which resulted in £1M raised for the Christie, a charity close to the hearts of the Seddon family. With such a rich foundation of talking points, it was our job to take Nicola’s causes to the masses and position her as an influential leader in the industry and beyond.

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • To position Nicola as a leading spokesperson for family businesses.
  • To position Nicola as the industry expert for mental health in construction.
  • To position Nicola as the face of a movement championing apprenticeships and build strong industry connections to create a hub of knowledge and opportunities for construction skills.

OUR SOLUTION

We set up a series of discovery calls with Nicola to learn detailed information about the initiatives she has worked on, as well as her views on the wider industry issues. This allowed us to select newsworthy topics to pitch out to the trade press.

We curated a media list of press and broadcast titles that would allow us to reach the desired target audiences for each topic. We also researched award opportunities that would celebrate the admirable initiatives that Nicola was spearheading within the industry.

It was important to us that we were able to portray the emotive element of these critical issues and that the communications we delivered provided clear and practical solutions for the reader. It was only by having in depth discussions with Nicola and her team, as well as spending time to carry out our own research that we were able to do this.

This is an ongoing mission but so far we have delivered some valuable outcomes. These have included interviews with BBC Radio and thought leadership articles in key publications such as Construction News, Building and Construction & Civil Engineering.

Projects like this are marathons, not sprints, it’s about building up from a foundation with evolving messaging that reacts to current events. Increasingly we have seen press reach out to us for comment from Nicola on related topics because she is now established as an authoritative voice. A profile like this is not something that can be built over night but with dedication and targeted messaging, the results can be priceless

Nicola Hodkinson:

“Driving conversations about the mental health crisis and skills gap in our industry can help to transform the lives of our workforce. Rumpus has been instrumental in helping us do exactly that. It is only by speaking about these critical issues that we can inspire others to do the same. Having a strong PR team to secure valuable opportunities and fine-tune our messaging has given us a platform to create the positive change we wish to see”
